Late Summer

Hello to the (surprisingly numerous) High Pony Tail followers. It's been a while since the last bunch of posts. I actually have a large number of LP transfers and out-of-print CDs uploaded and ready to go – probably enough to keep us occupied until the end of the year. And I've been enthusiastically scanning covers and writing the usual fol-de-rol to introduce each item. Unfortunately this new-found enthusiasm has coincided with a total meltdown at Mediafire headquarters: I have been spending all of my time reuploading parts of previous posts that have 'gone missing' without rhyme, reason or pattern.

I have 'spoken' to the people in Harris County, Texas and they ensure me that their servers are working perfectly. I have paid for extra bandwidth but that has had no apparent effect.

So for now I am putting a hold on any further posts. Please don't hesitate to let me know about files that aren't downloading for you – I don't blame you! I continue to be grateful for and amazed by the intelligence and generosity of the people who have found this blog. Perhaps things will clear up at MF as the summer ends. (Yes, I've thought about moving to a different service, but the alternatives – Megaupload and Rapidshare – don't appeal to me for numerous reasons. And can you imagine reuploading all of these files to another service?)

I especially want to apologize to those of you who recently sent me hard-to-find recordings to share. (You know who you are.) I was planning to begin again by posting your offerings. But for now I can't see continuing to post links just to watch them disappear.

Again, please feel free to leave comments here about any and all DL problems and I'll try to take care of them as quickly as I am able.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that the usual fol-de-rol is much appreciated. So thank you!

Emotion seconded...many thanks for your efforts, esp. doing the drudge-work of re-uploading material. It's greatly appreciated! Even when you aren't sharing new material, you should still feel free to post commentary, though; I know I'd enjoy reading it. In a cultural moment of increasing info-glut, I wonder if _access_ to information, as nice as it is, is quite a bit less important than thoughtful _consideration_ of the available information.

Dear Maready, I also have missed your posts over the summer. Is there a way I can e-mail you to ask advice about needledrop blogging, turntable issues, and the like? TWS

Hi, there are problems with files #3,8,11 of Ferneyhough's 'Transit' rip - extracting tool says that FLAC's are corrupted... Thanks for the blog and an occasion to leave a comment. Andy.

Even without the occasional shout out to the wonderful and long-suffering people of Palestine I'd be a fan of your wonderful pages of NONO, Barraque, Donatoni and what-all!

..hope to see some new gems appearing during these final days of life on earth.

Maready,

So sorry to hear about your Mediafire problems. As of yet, I haven't seen any issues on my end, but I'll definitely watch out for them.

Two things I wanted to ask you: 1.) I have a couple of treasurable records that I would like transferred to MP3 or FLAC. Sadly, I don't have the equipment to do this. Would it be possible for you to do this for me some time? Perhaps we can work something out? The two records in question are recordings by Efrem Kurtz and the NYPO playing the Ballet Suites of Shostakovich. The other record is the String Sextet and the Fourth Symphony of Saburo Moroi--a very underrated, almost unknown composer. He had two or three of his works recorded in the CD era. Most notable of these was a Naxos disc of his Third Symphony. I would deeply appreciate it if you could transfer them and make them available on your blog. Do let me know.

2.) I opened up a new blog. I'll be uploading in both lossy and lossless formats. I'd appreciate it if you could include my new blog in your blog list. The address is http://problembearspantheon.blogspot.com/.

I hope you're doing well, Maready. Your blog is a gem that makes me appreciate the existence of the internet. Do take care of yourself.

Best regards,

All I can say is that visiting your blog has been even more fun than visiting one of the giant Tower Records in the U.S. a decade or so ago on one of my rare trips back to the States. Not only do you have the great (and rare!) music, but your comments are a delight to read.
I see you have a new blog and I wish you the best of success with it.
(Re: Mediafire, I have found on another blog where the blogger uploaded the exact same files to Mediafire and 4Share, that the Mediafire downloads were occasionally corrupt when the other server's downloads never were. I frequently downloaded from both, and never had problems with the latter, but whenever a problem occurred with Mediafire, I could always rely on 4Share for a reliable download.)

Olde Edo --- thanks for your comments. I'm still testing Rapidshare's reliability; I don't want to jump to contusions, but so far there have been NO corrupt files. I would be glad of an alternative to MF and RS, but I really dislike the interfaces of 4Share and Megaupload and HotFile. In any case, your generous contribution of the Feldman disc will be one of the first posts at the new place, and I hope to begin posting there this week, as I begin a 2-week holiday.

I do really miss the Tower Records of old --- record shopping has been one of my preferred activities since I was a kid. Alas, it was probably for the best, as I racked up quite a lot of credit card debt in the run-up to the demise of the 'brick and mortar' CD store ...

Hope to hear from you again at the new address and thanks again for the share.

Oh, yes...I have had numerous problems with Mediafire files that I've uploaded. Mostly they are of the "No servers available with that file" issue. That almost always REALLY means "we lost it." There are also the files which will only partially download. Nothing like getting only the first four minutes of the last movement of Bruckner 9! And then there were the two days or so when Mediafire was totally inaccessible. Turns out that the perpetual "Andrea" who answers Mediafire "trouble tickets" (once in a while she answers them, anyway) admitted that they had taken the entire site down and couldn't get it back up for MUCH longer than had been anticipated.
